i've been an audiophile all my adult life. the first thing i will do is to state what should be obvious - "better" sound is a perception, not a fact... unless you're going from a boom box to a great system, or something silly like that.
amps. well, they amplify. if they add "coloration" that is distortion - making sounds that were not fed into them. you should be able to switch amps and never know it (at reasonable volumes, etc.) if not, something's wrong.
many worship specs - total harmonic distortion, output power, etc. etc. etc. long ago i decided if i can't hear it, it is not real...
in real-world, cheapo stuff like car stereos, manufacturers have invented circuitry that creates a "sound" for their products in order to identify, and individualize their brand. if your jvc sounds "better" than your avalon amp something weird is going on because the "sound" of jvc (and all brands) is created, long before the waveform gets to the power amp stage. i.e. it is being fed to the avalon amp, just as it will be to the amp inside the unit.
those avalon amps are not slackers. they will blow all but the toughest speakers (if you listen to anything with some bass). so if you hear a difference it SHOULD be only at extreme volumes, and the result of the output and current limiting of the two amps. far more likely you will fry the tiny speakers you can use in the avvy before that difference can become apparent.
the avalon has speaker cabinets in the doors - tiny, tuned bass reflex enclosures. by far the best thing that could be done, in this car, is to buy some stock speakers because they match the enclosures, into which they will be placed. i don't think toyota will sell you the real speakers for this car. i could be wrong?
