I would'nt consider replacing with o/e as there are after market speakers that will fit in the factory location with no modification and superior sound. The factory speakers are cheap paper cones.

so it might seem... however, the stock speakers conform to the bass reflex mounts, built into the car. i.e. they have the correct free air resonance to maximize the bass output using the speaker mounts that are in the doors.

Original speakers are garbage. There are many, many better solutions in the aftermarket, take a look at Crutchfield. My speakers make my ears bleed.

You can also modify the speaker housing to fit 5.25" speakers, the thread is stickied at the top section of the forum.
