I have a 97 avalon and it needs a new left drive shaft and when I called napa parts for a new axle they said there are 2 types of axles, a bolt on and a slide in. I checked my car a sure enough it is bolted in. My question is all the manuals I checked do not mention anything about a bolt in drive shaft and there was no mention of it when I did a search of this forum, so has anybody ran into this and what do you torque to bolts to? I have changed drive shafts on my camry and prizm and have never seen this type of drive shaft.
the way i understand this, it's the right (passenger's' side) axle that differs... and the two kinds are a "complete" axle (that includes everything from the trans to the wheel - a "long") and a "short." the short, which i have not seen, goes from the idler bearing to the wheel. in my understanding, the left axles were all the same?
Huh, I didn't know there were two different styles of axles for the Avalon. Mine's got the bolt on type. Anyway, with the bolt on version, the right and left are the same part. The 6 socket head cap screws holding it to the tranny's stub shaft should be torqued to 48 ft-lbs.
The "plug in" kind are like BonzoGonzo describes; the right/left are different part numbers, different lengths. The long one, on the passenger side has a carrier bearing.

I should've mentioned. They came out of the Haynes manual for my Camry, which can have either the 3VZ-FE V6, or the 1MZ-FE V6 engine. It lists the torque for both at 48 ft-lbs. I'm ASSUMING the 1MZ-FE used in the Avalon is the same.

i did not know the bolt on style made it onto the avvys. i saw it on the axles that were cut off the jdm engine/trans i bought last year. i think the engine i bought came from a sienna minivan. i don't think they have avvys in japan?
a lot of my ideas about this stuff come from buying parts for my car and answering questions, as i do. when i bought the right axle they asked if it was a short, or a long, and proceeded to explain the difference...
I just replaced the left drive shaft, also called a CV axle, on my 96 Avalon. One thing that will make your life easier is to leave the car in neutral when you turn it off. If you turn it off in park, you can't get it in neutral without starting it. The chime will keep chiming in neutral with the engine off, so just disconnect the battery. In neutral, you can turn the shaft so you can get to each of the 6 bolts.
As part of my tranny replacement on my 96 Avalon I'm replacing the driver's side (short) drive axle; possibly the pass side (long) one as well. Any recommendations on a source for quality replacement axles? I got NAPA and O'Reilly's locally or all the online vendors. However, the online vendors appear to have a number of manufacturers they sell for; I don't know which manufacturers are crappy and which are quality. Any advice would be appreciated.
Stay away from Cardone's rebuilt units. On my Camry, I went thru 3 of 'em before getting a good one for the passenger's side. They were bad right out of the box. Actually the 3rd one was a new one; the clerk at the Carquest store where I bought them felt so bad about it, they gave me a new one instead of rebuilt the 3rd time.
