how do the codes work?

some codes can be "pending" what does that mean? some codes take 2 instances, before they turn the light on? 0136, for example? i've been reading these posts but none of them were about my issue, so my perceptions may not be good.

how do the codes work? if a code is generated, and pending, but does not happen again like... within a certain time limit, does that code get trashed, or will a pending code always cause the light, after a certain amount of time?

Some of them take multiple drive cycles before they store as a permanent DTC, others pop up immediately.

As far as I know, no. I know that the Toyota dealership's diagnostic tool, Techstream, can do what you're asking and then some. It's a really cool piece of technology. However, the machine is $5000 and having a dealer check it out isn't cheap, as I'm sure you know.
