Crank Pully removal/Water pump Job

Hello Everyone. Im in need of some advice. I am working on a 97 Avalon XLS with 218,000 miles. I have done water pump jobs on other cars so im not new to the task.

My only problem is that I cant get the Crank Pully bolt off. I have a impact that is rated at 260 ft. lbs. and it wont get the bolt off. Any one have any suggestions? Bigger impact? Direction of rotation?

This is so frustrating. How many ft. lbs. is that bolt on there with.

I feel your pain. I assume that crank pulley has been off at least one time before and you never know how much torque was used to re-install it or if someone did something stupid like use high strength Loctite. I have always had great success bumping the starter but I can't recommend that because I don't know how tight that baby is in there. Can you rent or borrow a 3/4" impact? I've read where they successfully removed the infamous Honda crank bolt (assuming you have enough air pressure). Correct torque is 159 ft-lbs.

Crank Pully

I have a 92 Honda Prelude w/H22 motor and I got the crank bult off that with no problem using the same impact. Im not sure whats up with the Avalon. What direction is the rotation?

I am trying to score a 425 ft lb 1/2" impact right now. Hopefully that will have enough umph to do the job. I have a thirteen gallon air compressor @125 psi with the reguilator removed.

So it packs a hell of a punch. My current impact shakes the crap out of the motor when im torquing on the nut. But wont break the bolt lose.

Its been a few years since I did mine but I'm pretty sure its lefty-loosey-righty-tighty. I'm sure someone will confirm.

should be standard rotation. right hand threads.
sounds like you need a stronger gun.
also make sure you arent using any extensions, and use the shortest socket that will fit on the bolt.

if you still have not resolved the issue..

get a torch on the crankbolt,
i've had 500+ft lb impacts have a hard time on honda pulleys. we heat that sucker up red hot and let her rip. (you will heat up the bolt red hot before you really start heating up the pulley)

standard trick is to use the starter to break it loose. get a breaker bar that reaches the ground or contacts the frame somewhere that will stop it from spinning, set it up and turn 'er over.

Concur with the starter/breaker bar method though it is the longest 2 seconds in auto repair. Recommend disabling the ignition prior bumping the starter.

Sometimes it is a real pain. There is a tool made to bolt to the front of the pulley that you insert a breaker bar to hold the pulley from rotating. Brace the breaker bar against the frame and use an Impact or, 3/4 drive breaker with a 6' cheater on it. You can use an extension out from the pulley and support it with a jack stand.
