Spoke too soon

Well as I said in my first post I have never had any issues with my Avalon.

Well the check engine light came on.

I'm getting a code p0402 and p1411.

I believe the second might be caused by the EGR valve.

I'm going to try and clean the EGR valve, any advice would be nice.

A new EGR is close to $175, that's a lot. Anyone know where I can find one for less? Would you take a chance with used?

This supposedly fits the 99 xls and is 30 cheaper. free shipping too.

Might want to do some research on part number to confirm.

Ok, I took the EGR assembly off and cleaned it. The assembly seems to move easily and the spring is pushing it into position. So I cleared the code and drove the car. The CEL came back on but this time the code is p1411. The OBD2 computers says "pump motor low voltage", but when I google it I get something about a faulty position sensor.

Should I take a shot at replacing the position sensor?

Ok, I cleared the codes and the P0402 came back, not the 1411 I was trying to figure out earlier.

I took the VSV off and ohmed it out. It ohmed good. I then applied 12VDC across the terminals and you could hear it switch, so I assume that it is good.

So now I've taken the part off that measures the EGR opening. I ohmed this and pushed the rod up and down. The resistance changed, but there was one spot in the middle where it felt like it was going over a bump. This doesn't seem right. This part is only about $35 so I might take a chance with replacing it.

The VSV is $100 and the EGR is $175, I cannot afford to shotgun those parts.

I really hope that it is the measuring device.
