I heard that it is wise to check/change the pcv valve on these things. So I bought one from the dealer and plan to put it in. I took this photo:
That is the PCV valve, right?
Notice how there appears to be some oil leak around it. There is a little oil around it on both sides. Is this a bad leak? The very back of it also didn't seem to go down all the way. Like it's not totally snapped in, and the rear part isn't quite totally flat in there, but it is close. You can see how kind of the rear of the valve is at an angle and isn't totally flat.
So, about changing it, I just pull the pcv valve up out of the valve cover, and then pull it out of the hose? Anyone changed one before? thanks.
You might find the rubber grommit has hardened and have a dificult time removing PCV. Buy a new grommit if this happens. Try to catch broken grommit pieces before then fall inside

No, that's not a bad leak at all.

Yep, it's as simple as that. fj62 offered good advice; replace the grommet too. And be careful removing it. They're often brittle or rotted by the oil to the point of crumbling.

thanks guys. so the very bottom of the pcv valve in the pic there is the grommet? it's kind of the circular lip. and I should hold that down and pull the pcv valve out? or pull the grommet out with it? ( do I want to pull the valve and grommet out, or just the valve?)
I don't think the part came with the grommet. should i buy the grommet before I pull the old pcv valve out ? it would probably be bad if the old grommet was unusable and I had to just put the valve in without the grommet.

Yes, the grommet is at the very bottom. The PCV valve has a lip or barb that presses thru the grommet's hole. So pull the PCV out first, then carefully remove the grommet. And definitely get a new grommet before doing this job. It's a cheap part. And the old grommet isn't sealing very well, as evidenced by the oil that's weeping out. That's part of the grommet's job, to prevent oil leaking there.

man...that's another thing I should have changed (aside from spark plugs) when I did my front/rear valve cover gasket.. this past weekend..but it was the first time I did it and took me about 5 and 1/2 hours with going to the store .....and I had to be done by 6 to leave with the wife .......
Where is this PCV valve located? I can't seem to find it. Do I need to remove the plastic engine cover to see it? Any one has pictures or help me to the right direction (95 avalon)? Thanks much...

On mine you don't have to remove anything. It's near the passengers side. it snaps into the valve cover.
This one seems like another good sticky worth post for people that are new to Avalons. It seems like there are allot of posts before where people are having a hard time finding it.
