A pillar wind noise.....

I've read up on the subject and my 96 suffers this malady. Either the TSB was never performed on this vehicle or it didn't last.

Anyone have a current solution for this noise? The car is so damn quiet this wind noise becomes very noticeable.....

Sorry for all the noob questions and multiple posts.

I've found that if I post multiple questions on one thread they don't get answered.

I'm not talking about this forum, just forums in general......

From what I remember that fix was very involved, and it was TSB-BO010-97. I searched this 1st Gen forum and didn't turn up any info about this issue, but I did find in a Google search that the repair was listed as 4.5 hours of work. You'd have to do some more digging to find out how many parts are involved with this repair and see if it's something worth tackling or not to eliminate the noise.

Sounds like the same information I read.

Doubt if the parts are even available anymore. I was hoping someone had perfected a shadetree mechanic method.

The car's really quiet and I'd LOVE to rid it of this wind noise.

I think I found the source of the passenger A-Pillar wind noise, for me its the mirror, there is a gap between it and the door(at the "Sail" part). Also as far I can tell its missing the foam which the driver side had and the passenger side had more play at the "Sail" part of the mirror. I'll report back tonight, I sealed both sides with electrical tape.

Wind noise is basically gone, right mirror was the one with the noise. Now I have to install the foam that's missing. I can't believe this was the problem, it has be an annoyance for years.

Hell if that's where the noise is definately coming from I can see a couple of cures.

We could remove the mirror and make a couple of gaskets using some type of innertube rubber then wrench it back down, or we could just caulk it with some urethane and cut that with a razor knife if you ever have to go back into the assembly.

Let me know what you try....

Good to know it's just the mirror and NOT the glass moldings. A whole lot less complicated..........

pmesfun, I tried the same thing (black electrical tape matches a lot better on a black car) But I'm still annoyed by the same wind noise, however it might be slightly quieter.

There is a pretty nasty gap between the mirror and the door arch, for sure.

I'll also agree with the right/passenger side being a lot louder than the driver side.

Well I found the Repair Kit from my parts department which is "Wind Noise Repair Kit BO003-97". Can't find the TSB anywhere and the service writers at my stealership act like they're Top Secret.

There's was also a "Wind Noise Service Information Booklet (P/N 00401-42978)". The parts kit consists of nothing more than whats referred to as Caulking Sponge Sealant pieces and strips.

Some of the "sponges" are 297 mm x 150 mm and vary in thickness from 3 mm to 10 mm. Then there's four 297 mm x 150 mm "sponges" that are divided into 27 strips each. One set is 3 mm thick and the other is 5 mm thick.

If we could get the parts and instructions we might be able to do the work.

But here's what I was thinking. If they had this fixed by 97, how about getting the 97, 98 or 99 window rubber? Think that would work? Might not be cheap, but effective........

I can't attach PDFs either. I'd say convert it to JPG images by taking screenshots, and then posting those. How many pages are there? If you need help with that, I can send you detailed instructions via PM.

tah - Thanks a bunch for sharing that! Wow!... basically shimming the door gasket to fit the door. How un-Toyota-like! And also foaming the crap out of the mirror!

I get some wind noise on my Avy that sounds like it's coming from the mirror area. I might try pmesfun's tape-it-up method to verify that's where it's coming from, and if it is, follow up with stuffing some foam behind it per the TSB's directions.

The door seals on mine are REALLY tight. As in, if I don't slam the door hard, it doesn't shut completely. So I think mine's good there.
