1998 Avalon Cold Start Hesitation
Hello Everyone! I have a 1998 Toyota Avalon XLS that has been very good to my family since we first bought it '97. However, with 186,XXX miles on the odometer, the car started to something a little funny.
When cold, the car will stutter in-gear (reverse or drive), as in, the transmission is attempting to locking up and is trying to stall the motor for a split second. This only happens when cold at a complete stop or until the car moves completely on its own without throttle input. In "park" and "neutral", the engine idles perfectly and revs with zero resistance.
My parents do not remember the last time the transmission fluid was changed so I drained and refilled with new fluid. The old fluid was brown and not viscous, and without any noticible metal shavings or debris. This did not fix the problem.
Please help Toyota Nation!
