bigger is better(oil filter bump)

i'm not sure of the actual sized OEM filter. (and if this has been discussed i apologize)

but if you just go to the parts store and get the fram or equivalent oil filter it's listed as 3614..which is pretty d@mn small. fram's little book shows the same for a 5S or 1ZZ (much smaller motors)

i had borrowed a 99 3.0 ford ranger for a few weeks while my car was down. did and oil change before returning. and noticed the filter was 3600...right next to 3614...for the heck i pulled both out. and the diameter and gasket size are identical. the 3600 filter is just longer.

so i've run this for about 10,000 miles. (3 oil changes) and haven't had any problems. but i would think more filter element is nice. and everyone talks about header burns....put that "filter socket" and extension away

easy reach bud

i would say almost 50% filter increase

Nice man, I seen something like that on the Camry forum but I'm not sure if anyone actually did it.

no worries, i've been using fram ph-3600 or motorcraft fl400s for a couple of years now.
there are purolator and wix part #'s that are pretty popular, too.

I use the Toyota YDDZ3 filter, it's about 25% bigger.

i'd go with purolator or wix, even the generic wal-mart supertech brand is better than fram. they have been tested many times over on different sites and fram always comes out at or near the bottom.

+1. I use the cheapest Puralator brand from Wal-mart when I don't feel like driving to the dealership.

There is one example. I'm studying for an exam else I would find more for you.
They have just had some really poor quality. There are a few separate instances that I have seen where they are hemmed together have come apart completely. I think it was on www.bobistheoilguy.com. I used to run them because I love the grip on the bottom but after all of the bad pictures I have seen I will never do it again.

btw.....how much gap is past your filter on there? I was going to run a larger filter with a oil sandwhich for gauges in between. It's about an inch thick. Would your oil filter hit the manifold?

Thanks for the bump, I need to change my oil tomorrow and bought a oil change special at autozone... I got a 3600 stp filter instead of what it calls for... filter is the same but longer

OEM V6 size is equivalent to the 3614, or Purolator L10241, PureOne PL10241, Wix 51348, Motorcraft FL910s.

The larger size, I think someone covered in somewhere, is the Fram 3600 you found, as well as L20195/PL20195, and Ford's Motorcraft FL400s, Wix 51516 etc. Some members have used it on the newer 2.4L engine too.

The newest FL400s became slightly smaller however. But find it at Walmart. Pick up a 5qt jug of Mobil-1 to go with it. IMO FL400s is a way better filter than the Fram.

FL400s can fit the 5SFE too, but some of the 4-cyls have serious oil drain back problems (balancer assembly?), so a smaller filter may be better for dry startups.

Also check out this video on cutting open the FL400s, L20195, Pep Boys PPL20195, and PH3600. Check out the Fram at around 10:15.

Do you still dump in 5qts of oil, even with that filter that is nearly twice the size? I'm liking the idea of of the larger filters, espeically the motocraft one. Seems cheap, $4? I pay like $5.50/ea and buy half a dozen at a time at my toyota dealership.

edit: though sometimes i don't see the point. Payed $5.50 for a filter, and go to advance auto/whereever else and you pay like $25 for the cheapest oil that isnt store brand. I think lasttime I paid $27 for 5qt jug of penzoil and the $5.50 for the filter, rings me up past $33 after tax, while at the dealership you can get the oil change and a wash for $30. Sure you gotta wait, but hey, free cookies, and a car wash!

Though there was that one time they stripped out my oil pan and blamed it on the cars age...

the filter is only like a inch longer, I didn't measure but not a lot of difference. I changed mine with a STP 3600 and Mobil 5000 (autozzone $16 special) The extra inch or Two is worth it in my option. I put in 5 qts and was reading a little under full (not enough to matter)
Also Jigg007 if you are looking for oil filters you can go to rockauto.com and get them for $2 and buy walmart supertech oil... its not bad stuff and it saves you the cost at the stealership.
