Installing Adjustable Intermittent Wipers

First off, this is a great message board. I have searched for one that looks like it has knowledgable members, and I feel like I've struck gold finding this place.

I have a 1997 Toyota Avalon XL. The owner's manual shows the wipers having adjustable intermittent settings. But mine is just one setting for intermittent. The little adjuster ring isn't there and it never was.

So I'm thinking the upper model of Avalon, the XLS, must have this feature.

Would it be as easy as just obtaining the new wiper control lever (whatever you call the stick that sticks out of the steering column) and replacing it? I mean, should there be other modules I need to add, or should it all be self-contained, and just plug-N-play?

Thanks.

Welcome to the forums, even my 1990 celica has intermitted wipers, my 94 rolla had them, both were std, ARE you sure that yours didn't come with it? i find it amazing what was std 7 years before your car, became optional later for higher models of the same manufacturer...

I'm 100% sure they're made with intermittent, but not adjustable intermittent. You getting what I mean? I'm probably not describing it properly.

But basically it has INT, LOW, HIGH settings, but was made without the adjustment for the intermittent wipers to set the length of the delay.

Anybody know where to find a wiring diagram so I try to get the info from it? This is driving me NUTS!

When I looked at the wiring info for my Corolla it shows all components as internal to the combination switch itself, (including the relay and the control board) I have been considering the same swap, as soon as I get a good price on a switch I plan to try exactly what you are talking about.

Check with your library to see if they have access to the Alldata or the Automotive Repair Reference Center they have wiring in PDF format that can be printed.

On the wiring that I have, the combination switch is shown in dashed lines everything inside the lines is part of the switch.

My 05 Corolla XRS is the same way. In the manual it has a picture of the control stalk with a ring on it for adjusting the wiper delay. My car doesn't have that ring. I find it pretty strange that my car, a version $2k more expensive than the LE doesn't have what the LE has. Oh well, I can learn to live with out the adjustible function.
