hey everybody, i just installed a cold air intake on my 96 avalon and i don't know if it's in my head, but i swear to god it feels like i lost power. i'm thinking about going back to the stock setup. does anybody have any ideas? the cone filter and tubing are 3" and the filter is a no-name filter. is that my problem? i thought about buying a K&N cone filter, but if i don't want to buy it if it's not going to help and it'd be a waste if i end up going back to the stock airbox...help please?
You may have lost power, how is the "cold air" intake setup? Is it really pulling in cold air? If the filter is in a place where it would be pulling hot air into the TB, or whatever the toyota has for induction, you'll lose power. A lot also depends on how bad the stock setup is. Are there a lot of bends in the intake tract running from the filter to the TB (throttle-body or toyota equivalent)? Also, pulling in more air without moving more out isn't "always" beneficial, especially on a smaller displacement engine. I have a 9" K&N cone filter in my fender-well, so I know it gets the coldest air possible, far away from the engine heat. HTH

if its just the pod under the bonnet, thats a short ram. all cotton gauze filters, even cheap $2 ones all work great, its in the nature of the material design. short rams are ok for cold nights, hi rpm where air flow is more critical or for forced in duction (wher eyoud have an intercooler).
best cold air would be get ya stock box back, but remove the standard pipes off it and make your own bigger one to a location somewhere with high air pressure out the front.

After using those cheap filters, I just cleaned a nice film of grime at the mouth of my intake (before the butterfly).
If you're going to use an aftermarket intake, invest in a quality filter. If not, then switch back to the factory filter setup. Whatever you decide, do not use those generic cone filters.
Mayhem, get the K&N filter; but you also have to undo the battery for about 30 secs to reset the ECU. This allows the ECU to take new readings to balance the air/fuel ratio.
I did my CAI and I didn't feel like I lost power Acutally I think it worked better. Now that the temp. here is cold, the engine loves it. The sounds is strong and deep. My pipe extended all the way down into the fender. I used a filter from the local auto shop... Overall maybe 1%-2% improvement ?
hey everybody, sorry it took so long to get back. been busy like you would not believe. i ran the hose down behind the fuse box and relay box and then down so basically it sits right above the left splash guard behind the bumper. on the one hand it feels slightly sloppy, not as tight as it was before when i accelerate, but on the other hand, i can actually hear my engine now. i'm thinking i should throw a K&N filter on. will a universal high-flow cat and performance muffler help with the airflow do you think? any suggestions on where i can get those, or what models i can cross with? thanks again for all the help.
