98 Avalon Starter Problem

Hi Y'All

Have a 98 Avalon w/ a starter problem - or at least thats what I suspect - i turn the key, it clicks but the starter doesnt come on... i do it 2-3 times - it comes on.... probably the heat or the solenoid connects... does anyone else have any experience with this?
how tough is it to replace a starter on 98 Avalon??

Max

The clicking problem is usually caused by bad/worn starter contacts.

You can remove the starter, take it apart, and replace the contacts.

The starter is on the top front of the tranny, so its easy to get to. Just 2 wires and 2 bolts.

Heres a link to a how-to:

Repair your own STARTER

Know all about this!
Had this same problem
You need a solenoid rebuild kit, DON'T BUY A NEW STARTER (besides their $200+)
plunger and contacts are made of soft copper and wear in time takes about and hr to change them out, and that includes removing the starter.

you need to order the kit on Ebay. $23 plus $5 shipping
get ahold of this seller (clickerfixer) and I know he can get you one

here is half of what you need, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WD1V
however email him tell him your problem and he'll lead you to the right kit (he's a nice guy)

The kit your looking at is only one 1/2 of what you need. You need these and the plunger that sits on them, you'll see when you get the kit. By the way it also comes with detailed instructions. He also has a website detailing this but I can't find the link. Any ?'s you can PM me.

Had the same problem, just bought a new starter, easy to install if you remove the air filter box. Box is held in by three bolts. Remember to stick a small screw driver into the electrical connection on the starter to remove the ignition wire. New starter ran me about $130. Old one would click a few times. Electrical contacts were worn. Install took about 1:30 hours. Not counting washing hands 15 minutes more.

Nope, the price you posted was for the TYC starter, Denso is $187.49 also it is re-manufactured. Just get yourself a starter rebuild kit, I am going to get one soon.

TYC is a start-up Chinese company. If you decide to go that way, I suggest you buy two. Install one and keep the other one in your trunk with a few tools.

you guys seem to be quite knowledgeable about starters.

i have one from the jdm engine but the connector for the solenoid is turned the wrong way - probably a year mis-match.

i don't usually take starters apart - lol. would it be hard to turn it around, so i could use that starter? or i could just make an extender wire.
