USA Tint with OEM Nav

Hi All,

Just a heads up, I picked up my 05 Limited last Friday. I took it to the tinting shop yesterday, and was asked by the owner of said tinting shop where the Nav antenna is located in the back windshield. I contacted my dealer who did not know but then went to the following website http://techinfo.toyota.com/. (thanks preskev ) For $10 a day or $50 a month you can download unlimited documents from this site.

Just to let you know the Nav antenna is located under the front dash after looking at a couple of the toyota spec documents. Therefore there is no reason not to be able to put on any type of tinting (metallic or non-metallic) you desire. I had put on a 30% bronze, which looks great with the pearl! Both AM/FM/ and XM radios all work exactly as before .

Now if only someone could find a way to auto select the I Agree button on NAV and be able to use Nav while vehicle is in motion . Please advise if you find a work around!!

Hope this was helpful!

See 05 Avalon - Procedure to Disable Seat Belt Chime for some of the discussions on the Nav topic. So far, there is not solution.

I normally tint my windows but with this car I thought I would try it out for one summer without it. I'm really happy with this car without the tint. We have had several 100 degree plus weeks and the heat coming through the glass is very well controlled. The amount of glass exposure on the side windows is also much smaller than my previous cars so I don't get as much direct sun.

Have you noticed if the tint impacts on the way the self dimming mirrors respond to rear headlights?

I had my 05 Avalon tinted (either, 30 or 35% light transmission , whichever is legal everywhere, I think 35%) -- nice!

I, too, want automatic "I agree" on the Nav warning and want my wife to be able to search POI while I am on the highway. It's ridiculous to have to get off the interstate to be able to access the Nav system and look for the next gas station or Cracker Barrel!

Auto select of "I agree" has been done, but it is a complicated hardware solution, not a simple software one. See http://members.cox.net/n0v8or/nav_controller_mod.pdf for instructions.
The Prius club forums describe a hardware solution to permit nav programming while in motion. It involves periodically interrupting the speed sesor input with a timer. Have not tried it yet, but I intend to.

you are truly an innovator! I am always impressed with engineers and engineering. I really like to see how things work (there are a couple of websites on this subject) and marvel at the minds that thought of how to do it. I know nothing of electrical or mechanical engineering and am too old and too busy to learn.. Thanks for your input. I'll not attempt this modification but it's good to know it's been done.

Now, start working on an easy fix (some module I can purchase and just plug in somewhere)to access Nav POI while traveling down the interstate!

My tint caused XM issues

I had my '06 (factory NAV and XM) tinted with 35% non-metallic (supposedly) 3M film, and had a severe loss of XM signal strength, but no affect on NAV. The factory XM antanna is under the rear glass next to the HMSL.

I fixed the problem by installing a Terk mini-XM antenna ($35, about the size of a quarter) on the roof at the top of the rear glass, ran the wire around the rear windshield (under the soft rubber) and into the trunk, where the XM receiver is. Looks good, no holes, no exposed wires.

Great reception now, even in the garage and underpasses. Not that I spend a lot of time in the garage sitting in the car by myself listenting to the radio, that would be weird.
