There is a lot of competition nowadays in this category.
If I was buying today I would strongly consider the Honda Fit which is similar in size, style, and specs, and it has a nicer interior in my opinion. The Nissan Versa doesn't really do it for me, and the Chevy Aveo just seems too cheap. VW Rabbit and Mazda 3 both look sharp, not sure what the starting prices are. You really just have to do your homework and drive them. Check out reviews online from some of the leading car magazines (Automobilemag.com, CarandDriver.com, etc) for their test comparisons.
Our other new car is an 06 hyundai accent, and although I don't love everything about it, it's a solid little car that gets you a lot for your money. Our 06 Xa has been okay, it is pretty fun to zip around town in, wish I would have added cruise control. It draws attention from many people, good and bad I guess. Co-workers call it the "wedge" or "door-stop" but I get to laugh at their gas guzzlers.
