Heat and A/C?

Today I had a car audio shop install an XM radio in my wife's 2000 Avalon XL. I gave them the Vehicle Specific Mount which they installed on the right side of the console. The A/C worked fine before the installation. After the install, the A/C did not blow very cold, even on the coldest setting. The compressor is running, and the high side tube is hot while the suction side is chilled. I turned the A/C off and the air became quite hot. It is as if the heater is on as well as the A/C. The A/C can't overcome the heat added by the heater.

Is this syptom just coincidence, or is it possible that the XM installer crossed up a wire or left something loose that would cause both A/C and heat to run simultaneously?

Thanks for your advice,
David Penz

P.S. By the way, the climate control is the manual type, with dual heat/cool knobs, not the auto version.

Sounds like he messed up the air input door control system. Not sure on the 2000, but there should be a door that closes on the heater core when the A/C coil is called for. Don't know if it is vacum or electric driven. You can check for a vacum line disconnected. I would take it back.

Yes, this sounds like the problem. The A/C system appears to be working OK, the cold air is being directed someplace else. The installation tech must have removed or damaged something.

Here are the directions:

This is of interest to me because I am about to install my mount on my 97--but Its a different mount. It does say in bold face -- Do Not Disconnect the Wires!

Let us know what happens after you take it back to the install tech

on the 2000, the a/c can be turned on at any temp setting. the prob is that the tech disconnected or damaged the temp selection and so it is set to hot regardless of where you have the dial set, so hot air is coming in also, and like you said, the cool isn't enough to overcome the heat.

Problem resolved! The installer admitted that "a wire had gotten pinched" and corrected the problem expeditiously. Thanks to all for the spot-on advice. dp
