My 2000 AVY XLS (83K miles now) is due for Tire change. The car was running on 205 60 R16 Michelin Energy till now and I found them to be pretty decent.
Has any one upgraded to 215 60 R16 for the Avalon ? How has your experience been ?
Also any recommendations on tire choices alongwith indicative prices and retailers would be welcome.
FWIW - I put about 50k on a set of Michelin MX4s, and presently have 40k on Bridgestone Potenza 950s. Good ride, very good performance in the rain, quiet. But I'm at 205/65-15 the original size. I'm now looking at Cooper's CS/4 as the likely replacement. What are your priorities, though? Cost, performance, looks, mileage, lot to choose from.
i wouldn't recommend changing the size to a 215-60. you may cause issues with the vsc or abs systems. That tire size will be a bit larger diameter as well as obviously wider. i have yokohamas on mine and i hate them. Michellin's would be the best choice, i dont think they make that style of energy tire any more. if you don't have the wallet for michellins like i didn't, sumitomo htr+ are an absolute steal. get on tirerack and look at the choices. try to stay with a v rated or at minimum an h rated tire.
I'm running 215/55R17 on Lexus ES350 rims. They are the tallest tire that will fit in the rears. I no not recommend the size I have, but the 215/60R16 will be fine.

Here's the website to use when seeing what other alternative tire sizes can safely and correctly be used on your car without any guesswork:
Both my buddy and I have second gens and we are extremely happy with Yokohama tires. He went with Avid TRZ and I went with Avid H4. Both are great in the rain and much quieter than the Michelins they replaced. We went stock size though.
I have an 01 xls and am also in the market for new tires. After a little research I had planned on going with the Yokohama Avid TRZ in the factory size. On one website they were rated as the best overall tire, plus are 80k rated, tho I am unsure of the speed rating. What negative experiences have you had with Yokohamas, and what tire model?
I have been pleased so far with Avid H4 but I only have 12,000 miles. The TRZ are cheaper and my friend absolutely loves them. I had Michelin's MXV4 (sucked after 5000 miles) and Goodyear Eagle HR (sucked and were loud). Great traction and they handle the roll better than the last two.
I have had the AVid TRz for about three months now. 5000 miles or so. They are on my Pontiac Grand Prix. I cannot say enough good things about them The macro dynamics of the tire is very good. Grand Prix are not good riding car. But it minimized those smaller road bumbs. Naturally it will not take care of the short commings in the suspention in general.
It's very quiet. I've also noticed it's quiet when the roads are wet. My former Goodyears were noisy in the rain
U can find all the information u seek, at Tire Rack...I've bought 4 sets of tires, 1 set of rims, and 2 sets for HR springs from them..Awesome customer service, fast delivery!
