Won't start...

2002 Avalon - Wouldn't start (is turning over, NOT starting), once, about two months ago. Kept trying, 5 or 6 times and finally started up. No problem for about a month. Then did same thing again. Then, no problem till this week. Did it several times in past days until wouldn't start at all. It's getting gas, because after 4-5 times of trying to start it, you can smell the gas. I even took a spark plug out and found it to be wet with gas. Called a friend that used to work at a dealership, he told me sounded like it could be the "idle air control valve" and told me to, barely depress the accellerator pedal and try to crank it. What do you know, it cranks up. Now, this thing is listed at $220 at autozone.com and I can't find it on any, genuine Toyota parts, dealers online under that name. Is it called something else? Is it a pretty good chance that this part is actually my problem? Don't want to spend $200+ on something I can't return if it doesn't fix the problem. Thanks
FYI - No "check engine" light ever came on.

That iacv seems to be a thing that gets dirty or goes completely in the newer generation 1MZ-FE engines. Our Sienna did the same thing, although it would start just fine and die right away. I cleaned it twice, but ended up just getting a new one as it started to be a bother and rather dangerous sitting at a light with both feet on the gas and brake.

the iacv gets stuck sometimes due to carbon build-up. My 2001 Avy started idling low in the summer and it just turns off teh engine. So I tooked mine out and cleaned it with MAF sensor cleaner, make sure the cleaner is safe for the electric. Let it dry off. Also, clean the throttle body. The low idling never happens again.

Just got done cleaning iacv. I think mine was stuck. Sprayed the cleaner in and it didn't come out the bottom tube, like the link above said it would, it just filled up and came out the trottle body. I ended up taking the electrical part off the front of the valve, as soon as I did it dumped all the spray that was inside out the bottom tube. Wasn't that dirty looking, but a couple of specks of, what I assume is, carbon washed out. Let it dry. Put it all back together and started it up several times with out a problem. Got to go get some electrical cleaner to clean the MAF, but it appears the iacv was giving me trouble. Thanks again.

Well, if you go the full route and pull the black electrical part off then there are some things to be aware of.
- Be very careful as there is a metal washer in there that has the potential to fall off and into the engine bay.
- After cleaning, make sure the little stud rotates freely. That is what is controlling the flow.

Actually, the full cleaning can be found here:

Hey. Great link, again. Of course, all I did was the "on the car" cleaning from your earlier link + removing the valve controller cover. I did notice the little washer and kept it in tact. The valve that that washer is over was actually stuck when I removed the cover. Getting it free was what free'd mine up. Not to ancious to take all that back off right now, so maybe next oil change I will do the "whole" cleaning.

Just got some MAF cleaner and cleaned that. It's drying right now.

Great information. Saved tons of $$$ doing it myself. THANKS

next time you do the cleaning, just take out the air intake tube to get access to the throttle body. Disconnect the tube(s) that is connected to the IACV. There are two holes on the inside of the throttle body, you can see it when you take out the intake tube. Spray the MAF sensor cleaner into the holes, this will clean up the IACV. Make sure you have a towel to catch the carbon and the cleaner solutions when it come out of the IACV tube. Did you take out the IACV controller too? The one on the passenger side with the actuator? That part gets sticky too.

We already directed him to that. He already mentioned that it didn't work.

Huh? I don't know of an IACV controller on the passenger side. As far as I know, there is only one IACV and that sits on the throttle body

I found the IACV controller in the service manual. It's on the passenger side, it has 4 bolts, and the actuator is connected to it. It looks like a stop sign.
His IACV must be very clogged up with carbon deposits which is why the car has problem starting up, should change it.

Have you even read this thread?
- We already pointed to pictures of the IACV.
- He already tried to shoot cleaner in the holes
- He already cleaned the IACV and reported that it works great
No, he shouldn't replace the part if it can be cleaned and returned to working status like he already did.

P.S. the IACV doesn't look anything like a stop sign and doesn't sit on the passenger side.

I wish that I can find a way to copy and paste the service manual to show you what I'm talking about.

I'll do it for you. Here is the IACV page of the service manual. Clearly shows the IACV sitting directly under the throttle body pointing towards the drivers side of the engine.
