USA 2000 Avalon Wipers "Intermittent" Setting

My dad has a 2000 Avalon. Recently, when the switched is turned to the "intermittent" position, the wipers go to the "slow" speed setting no matter what variable setting the dial is turned to. Anybody else familiar with this problem and/or how to diagnose the source of the problem? Thank you!

The same problem developed today and Toyota said the wiper motor is most likely the problem. I asked about the wiper switch and they said the motor is what they replace most. Cost wise one is about as bad as the other. Going to get worked on Friday.

The wiper motor needs to be replaced at approx. $300.00 parts and labor.

There is a circuit module attached to the motor, it is not the wiper switch on the column. Learned the hard way, replaced switch first, out $150.00.
