Hi all. Newbie & first thread. Nice site. Q: Any advice/help with the annoying rattle of the factory sub woffer rattle? I've tried tightening all screws & conncections and cover. Still get more vibrations w/little volume to it.
Suggestions-advice.
Love the car. Had it (2) months now. Best car purchase.
welcome Mike! and join the crowd.... just about everyone i've talked to has a blown rear sub....lol this speaker is actually an 8 inch woofer and not really a sub. dealers want at least 150.00 for this speaker...i've been watching ebay and other places for over a year... some just put a good sub in the trunk. the best fix in the meantime is to open the trunk...look up under the rear deck...take a pair of wire cutters and cut the wires. this way you can crank some volume out of the rest of the speakers without the sub rattling.
Hey Mike, i had the same problem but took it one step further. I disconnected the wires and removed the speaker all together. Toyota quoted me $250 for replacing it. I talked to my local stereo shop about replacing it with a "free air" subwoofer (older type of subs that sit on the rear dash/panel and use the trunk as the box) but no one makes those any more. So I bought a 10" SAS amplified bazooka tube for about $200 installed. It sounds great too.
When replacing w/the 10" SAS, were you able to use the existing factory wiring or replace the factory woofer wiring? Also, did you have to purchase an amp to run the woofer you purchased?
Can you provide a link of what you bought and where to buy on line?
im pretty sure the shop did not use factory wiring, i doubt it would reach off the back dash. i did not need an additional amp, bazooka makes both a 100 watt and 200 watt version, i think mine i the 100 watt, which in addition to the aftermarket HD radio putting out 4 x 20, there’s plenty of bass. The shop even advised me that one powered sub, could adequately power 2 subs
heres a link to the tube. http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...rch=sas&tp=114
If you don't have any experience with car stereo installation, id recommend taking it to a local shop, this type of install should cost less than $100 and many headaches if you dont know what you're doing.
no real modifications, if u buy the foam kit, just buy the 8" diameter kit.
if u buy another oem-like replacement the woofer, all u have to do is match up the red (+) and black (-)wire on the woofer and connect them. 8" should fit well onto the black frame that holds the jbl woofer and use dampeners between the screw and black frame..
if u want you could rig the wire harness/adapter (female or male i forgot) from the blown woofer to the new woofer and plug it in to the car harness.

I replaced my factory 8" with an aftermarket sub like the one in the Pioneer link above. The swap was simple. A tiny bit of solder holds the new clips just like factory. I didn't even have to drill new holes. Unless you are adding an amp to power your new sub, save your $100. I am no audiophile but I do like my tunes loud sometimes (hard-of-hearing from playing it loud in my teens). My 2000 Avalon XLS stereo is one reason my wife and I race to see who gets to drive it.
I just replaced the factory cassette in my daughter's 97 Avalon with a nice Clarion CD/USB/iPod unit from Crutchfield. My plan is to add the above mentioned sub in the factory position since hers had no factory sub. She is less concerned about bass than I am but I do have to drive the car sometimes!
