Just inhereted a 2003 XL with a hair over 30K miles. But it needs the 30K major service. What gets checked and changed at this interval? What would a typical dealer service cost?

Five years and barely 30k means a lot of sitting or short tripping or both.
I'd change the oil and filter, air filter, coolant, PCV, ATF, cabin filter, rotate and balance tires, inspect the drive belts (2), inspect the hoses (coolant, vaccuum, fuel, brake lines), check the battery (elecrolyte level and the post connections), check the brake condition (pad thickness, rotors and fluid), have somebody scan the vehicle and write down any codes stored, and go from there.
The work is routine maintenance and would not be costly. You'd know what you have!
Might be a plum. These are good cars.

Yes, the car is a plum. Literally the little old lady (mom). Except for widespread paint scratches, the HVAC controls which don't open the heat to the floor and some weird plastic-sounding whirrr in the steering column when I turn the steering wheel, the only neglected things are the 30K items.
The dealer guy read off his list what they do and I was just overwhelmed by how many items are on there. there were a couple or three scans of computers, for example.
While I do almost all my own work, I would have taken it in for convenience, if not for the shocker price. Just installed new wheel/snow tire package from Tire Rack, so, they don't need attention. I know brakes, etc., so, I'll just plan on getting some service parts and do this.
thanks
