I have a 2002 Avalon w/ 76,000 miles on it. I bought it w/ 66,000 on it. Lately I have noticed a raw fuel smell when the air vents are in the fresh air setting. It doesn't seem to matter if the tank has just been filled or days later. Pretty much all the time. I can run it with the air vent setting in the recycle stage with no fumes. If the vents are on "fresh" it happens when I stop at a red light or any reason. It smells like I am standing at a gas station, holding my head down at the filler neck, sniffing while pumping gas. Not that I have ever done that. Please help!!!

With that much of a raw fuel smell (as opposed to an exhaust smell) with the fresh air vents open I would suspect a fuel system leak somewhere up front - get it looked at and remedied right away - fuel leaks in the engine compartment are not a good thing!

Always carry a good fire extinguisher, you never know when you (or someone you may come across) will need it.
