OBD-II Scanner Question?

I'm considering the purchase of an Actron CP9175 scanner to use on my 2003 Avalon, but I've read a review on Amazon that seemed to indicate that it doesn't work correctly (or at all) on some foreign cars, specifically Toyotas.

Has anyone had any experience with this scanner?

Does anyone have a better alternative to this particular scanner ... in the same price range ($90)?

Thanks!

As all newer cars use the same ODBII system might ask this question in a forum section that has more viewers such as Camry or the truck section. No need to state the model of car you have just that you have questions on this scanner.

There have also been many TN posts offering specific model scanner opinions, suggest doing a history search.

What he says /\/\/\

I will add, that the AutoEngenuity I bought several years ago requires me to purchase an additional package to read the more detailed reports which are apparently specific to Toyota. But I've never really needed them for basic troubleshooting. Common codes are common enough across all brands of cars I reckon.
FWIW my AutoEng OBD II scan tool is already out of date regards newer cars [2006 and newer IIRC]. Now AutoEngenuity wants another $300 for the newest CAN enabled scanner. But for my 1996 Avalon, I'm just going to use what I've got.....it's sufficient.

^^What they said. The main difference is the ability to read the enhanced Toyota codes as well as the basic OBDII codes. The more funtions a scanner has the higher the price.

I looked at the reviews on Amazon and it seems to be a mixed bag. 1 Toyota loved it and another hated it. The decision should be based on what info you want. Basic OBDII or basic and Toyota enhanced.

Yeah, I've never been a big fan of Actron.
They are just barely adequate IMO.

The only problem with mine [AutoEngenuity] and the competitor AutoTap is that you have to provide your own laptop or palm pilot......the Actron gives you all of that in one package.
Have you checked to see what the "TwoGuys Garage" man says? Sam Memolo. Google him and read what he says on his website. I trust him (mostly) - LOL, I am suspicious of his endorsement of the "Tornado". ;-)

Wink

I ended up buying a "refurbished" Equus Innova 3100 off eBay (albeit an older model without the Emission Status lights) ... probably will do everything I need it to do!
