USA Lights flickering

I wanted to see if there were any updates related to the lights flickering on Avalons. We have recently inherited a 2000 Avalon XLS and my wife has complained about the lights flickering and I finally got it to replicate yesterday. I checked with 4 local T. dealers and of course they all swear they aren't familiar with a problem like this but if I wanted to bring the car in blah, blah, blah. I would appreciate any help if there is an update to the posting from Sept. about this occurance.

You guys have been a tremendous source for some other minor things on the car that needed fixing.

My wife's xls had the same problem... it turned out to be a bad/old battery.

i think toyota took the stand that since not enough people were complaining, they'd ignore it. i admit that i never noticed that mine were flickering until i read the posts and then looked for it, and sure enough they were. it is caused by the a/f sensors. i think that the alternator is minimally adequate for the job it must perform. older cars didn't have as much problem, but these newer ones have so much that runs off the electric. engine computer and many sensors, trans computer, body computer, higher watt headlights, heating and air, premium stereos that draw more and on and on. when batteries are cold, or start to get weaker, they can't compensate as quickly for the draw and the flickering gets worse. the only real fix is to probably put in a higher amp alternator. guys who put custom stereos in cars with big amps and speakers that need lots of power are used to this. i saw a post on another thread that a guy said the highlander alternator is a direct replacement for the avy at a higher 130 amps, so maybe thats the fix. until toyota were to admit they have a poor design, there will prob never be a fix from the dealer, and on these older cars, chances of that are nill.

I have a 2002 and I've never encountered that problem. I tend to agree, though, that many modern cars are not outfitted with sufficiently powerful alternators given the electrical load that is carried in these vehicles. Also, I suspect that in order to save weight many manufacturers are installing cheap aluminum cables to carry power, which can result in flickering. Same problem with soooo many new homes built today...turn on the microwave or run a computer printer and watch all the house lights brighten and dim, brighten and dim....
