2001 Avalon with "VSC" , VSC OFF and Check Engine light on.
I have a 2001 Avalon XLS with 60000 miles on it. About two weeks ago the "check Engine" , "VSC" and "VSC OFF" light came on and then it went away after three days. However yesterday it came back on while driving. Just was wondering if anyone experience the same problem and what was the fix...
If check engine light (CEL) is on have the trouble codes read using an ODBII code reader. AutoZone will check the codes for free as may other auto parts outlets. The dealer can do this but will charge a diagnostic fee. The problem could be minor or serious.
The VSC turns off whenever CEL comes on to minimize the load on the engine; as such it is possible nothing is wrong with the VSC.
I have this same problem on my 2001 Toyota Avalon with 160K miles on it. It just happens every now and then - seems to be related to refueling. I bought a code reader from Harbor Freight for around $30 and reset the code myself whenever it happens - takes just a few minutes. Doesn't appear to be anything to worry about but if you are concerned, have it checked out.
it's a 1 hour touch at toyota. apparently they clean your fuel cap area and reset the computer. try taking a wire brush and some rust stop ( my fuel nozzle entry is extremely rusty) to it and disconnect the battery to reset the codes. good luck.
you need to post the cel code that is coming on. it could be a loose gas cap, or bad sensors. no good advice until i see the code. if it happens after refueling, you may not be tightening the gas cap enough, or it is bad. the vsc will ALWAYS shut down when a cel comes on. get the code and repost. easy fix, just get me the info
I had the exact same thing about 2 days ago. All of a sudden those 3 lights came on. I know the vsc and vsc off come on everytime check engine light comes on to lighten the load.
I took it to the dealer and he says my code is p0446 which is somethings with charcoal canister malfunction. Cost in parts alone is 425 and labor is around 650 although its not a serious problem. Can somebody help because seems a lot of money for no improvement
This happened last year and the tech just said the engine detected it wrong and they just reset the code and would not worry about it.
I've got a 2001 Avalon which failed my IL emissions test this morning. They said the culprit was code P0446. I'm thinking of replacing just the VSV by the canister and resetting the code (via the battery disconnect) but was wondering what some of you folks have done/heard. Also, I have not found just the option to purchase the VSV. It appears that I must buy the entire canister. Is this correct or are my search skills simply weak? Thanks!
I get this PO446 all the time on my 2001 Avalon along with the CEL, VSC, VSC off. Usually when the fuel tank is approaching a little past half empty. If I keep the tank between half full and full, it rarely happens.
I bought a code reader at Harbor Freight for around $30 and I reset the code when it happens (beats disconnecting the battery and resetting radio stations, etc). I haven't noticed any performance related issues for as long as this has been happening (well over 20K miles). I probably have to reset the code every 2 to 3 weeks because I fail to keep the tank half full.
After resetting the code, you typically have to drive the car about 100 miles before you can have it inspected for emissions. Otherwise, it will show up as recently reset and they won't pass the car.
If anyone thinks I am doing damage to my car, please let me know NOW. Thanks.
I just had this same thing happen on my 2001 Toyota Avalon with about 82,000 miles. I took it to my local Toyota dealer and they informed me that my gas cap was defective and not making a good seal. That is what was causing the errors. It made sense because we were noticing a strong gas smell when the car was parked in the garage. The diagnostic charge was $79 and I think the new cap will be about $25. Better than having to replace an emissions control module.
My 2000 Avalon, with 124K has just thrown some codes. I'm getting a P1135 and a P1130. The first is Air Fuel sensor heater circuit malfunction, bank 1, sensor 1. The second is, Air Fuel sensor circuit range/performance malfunction, bank 1, sensor 1. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Probably need to replace the sensor. First think is to get code turned off and see if it comes back; I never replace a sensor on the first indication. If it comes back, need to replace the sensor. Bank 1 is the cylinder bank at the rear of the engine compartment; sensor one is the first A/F sensor - before the cat. Air/Fuel sensors are AKA "wideband O2 sensors." Sensor is pretty pricey; it's a pain to get to but it can be a DIY.
