i have a stock 2001 avalon xl with 205-65R/15's on my car and they are wearing out...i have drivin about 57,500k so far and never had new tires put on since 01.

i want to upgrade to 225-55R/16's,...would that be a huge difference like with the speedometer and gas milage??

Don't know the answer to your question.
Why not go for another 60k with the original size?

Why do you consider this an "upgrade"? Slightly wider, with lower sidewalls? Unless you;'re going +1 with new wheels, it's going to look a little "lowrider" IMO.

will my ride be smoother if i get the 225's?

check overall diameter of the tires, i highly doubt it has any noticeable difference in gas mileage or speedometer readings. If you're running 22's tucked under the car, u may notice a difference.

If you upgrade you should get better handling, more grip, because 16" rather than 15" is exposed to the road. It's a sporty upgrade. Check out howstuffworks.com to see what those numbers mean. I dont think you need special rims either, unless you are going for that low rider look with the 1" sidewall. You may notice, however, a difference in MPG since the wider tires provide more rolling resistance. My Avy has a very precise yet dull feel to it and I have been wondering if the new tires might improve that.

Given the Avalon's suspension I doubt you'll notice much difference, but there will be a slightly stiffer ride. As for mileage, you need to check out assessments for the roll resistance of the tire you'd like to buy. Poor roll resistance eats into mileage, not by much, but certainly a couple percent. Depends on whether plus size is more important than wear and mileage.
