the dash is a *bleeeeep* to mess with. u will need the FSM to help you out. the clips/screws are hidden, so u dont want to break anything by accident. the FSM would show u where the clips are

Replacing these bulbs is super easy. First, remove the black plastic trim ring around the instrument cluster. There should be two or three screws on the top portion that are vertical. Once you remove these, pry gently around the trim, and the ring will pop out. With the trim removed, you'll be able to see the bolts that hold the instrument cluster in (should be gold 10mm bolts). Remove these bolts, and the instrument cluster will be free to come out. You'll have to move the steering wheel down to get it out, and once you have it a few inches out of the dash, flip it over and unplug the harness. With the cluster out, you'll see the vertical stack of PRNDL bulbs on the backside, just twist the bulbs and they pop out. Also, be careful of touching the backside of the cluster. It's a thin printed circuit board, and ESD can damage the components inside.

It's been a while, man, I don't remember exactly how to do it, just that it's a pain in the ass. Here's a diagram of it's location (not a very good one, but oh well), maybe it'll help you figure out what you're looking at.

yea pain in the ass for sure! i have the same manual and pic, it seems relocated it from pedal position in the older avalons and camrys and moved it all the way up there. gosh, i tried and tried, almost resulting in taking my whole driver dash apart but had to stop bc i needed to use the car for school back then. i might make another attempt when i get my car back.
