Bought a 2000 Avalon; blew the subwoofer already. Suggestions?

Hello all, I'm new to the forums and I bought a 2000 Avalon XLS last week. Its the quietest and smoothest car I have ever driven and the interior is very solid. Though I already blew the rear subwoofer. I did read the thread regarding the fix for the rattle; but I want to know what people have replaced the factory woofer with...? I was just going to drop the 8 inch Infinity reference series subwoofer in and connect it to the factory amplifier. I really don't want to add any after market amplifiers or have any subwoofer boxes in the trunk.

I know that a free air setup isn't recommended by Infinity, but they do say its possible and that the recommended power ratings should be cut in half for free air use. I'm going to assume the JBL stereo doesn't give 100 watts RMS to the rear woofer, so based on my assumption; it'll be fine.

Can anybody share their experiences with replacing the factory subwoofer, and using the factory amp? Does anyone know the sensitivity rating of the factory woofer?

Double check the impedance on the factory driver and the Infinity that you are going to put in. make sure they match. You will probably be disappointed in the output running free air. power handling is cut in half because there is too much air volume to keep the woofer cone in check. The air in a sealed or ported box acts as a spring to limit the cone movement. I would look at parts express for raw drivers. The is a decent speaker program called WinISD. You can load different woofers with the air volume in your trunk and compare output, cone excursion and so on. Stay away from any woofer that has more than a 4 layer voice coil...6 and 8 layer have a lot of inductance and can ruin the output stage of the amplifier. Good luck

Thanks for the info! Unfortunately my speaker doesn't need to be re foamed. Something else has broke, causing it to make a rattling sound. I have ordered the speaker in the second link that was posted by Eurobob. I have already tried replacing the rear woofer with an 8 inch woofer by MTX that I got from a shady local stereo shop. The results were less than impressive... coulbe be due to lack of proper installation as I was unable to fully seat the speaker in the factory speaker hole, but I took it out and returned it. I hope the speaker I ordered works out, regardless of it's performance - it will stay in the car... I really dislike tearing into the car I just bought less than a month ago.

So in my experience: MTX 8 inch speaker (4 ohm) - No good for factory replacement.

I will let you guys know my experiences with the new speaker when I get a chance to install it.

yep gerald, it is prob blown. just about every older avy i have seen this has happened. in lookin at several different cars, i think the problem is the way the speaker is mounted. it fits in a plastic housing, then another piece of plastic fits on top and is bolted down tight. this top piece squeezes the foam flat, and i think it makes it easier for the foam to break around that edge. i re-foamed mine and then did a friends and both sound like new, and for a fraction of the price of the toyota replacement (179 or more)

make sure the cover did not come loose and that is the noise you are hearing. there are a couple of snap tabs that it slides into. my cover has come loose several times and made strange noise, woofer good. take the cover off and listen again. if it still rattles, replace it. it will eventually wear out the voice coil and weld itself to the magnet gap and then you will get no noise and possibly damage the amp because it is now in a dead short.
