When I full depress gas pedal, it coughs and sputters and will not accelerate. I let up on pedal to about half throttle and it runs fine. It is still getting 26+ MPG. It gets me in a tight spot when tryinbg to pass sometimes. Any Idea?.
Ive seen 2 things cause this. Fuel pump/filter and alternator. If its the alternator not charging enough, your battery will be low and wont be able to put enough juice to the ignition coil to run the engine at higher RPMs. However, if you are not experiencing other electrical issues, this is not very likely.
Most likely is your engine is not getting enough gas, either from a clogged fuel filter or a failing fuel pump. Can you hear any noise from under the rear seat that would indicate that the pump is straining itself? If not, I would start with the fuel filter. It only takes one batch of bad gas to clog it up, and its a cheap part too.

I actually purchased a fuel filter about a month ago. It has a strange clip to get off so I haven't changed it yet. Any ideas about how that clip works?
I am having no electrical problems so I agree with fuel filter is problem.
Thanks for your help. This is a cool sight. With 4 of these Avalons, I will be using this often.

That clip is a challenge - one of the very few things I actually pay the dealer to do for me
Fuel starvation, then suspect plugs, then wires, then coils. In that order...
Another possibility is your injectors could be somewhat clogged. Do you do lots of stop and go city-type driving compared to highway driving? That type of driving is not very good for fuel injected engines, and can result in dirt/gum buildup.

Indeed! And not to mention the carbon buildup on the intake valves that can result from summer time oxygenated fuels - which each major city has specifically brewed for them this time of year - talk about expensive!!!
Anywhoo, throw a bottle of REDLINE Fuel Injector cleaner in the tank, which btw is getting hard to find?? Just use Techron instead. One sale with coupon at AutoZone (the 20oz) for 6.99 after rebate......no affiliation bla bla bla.
I used to have problems till I started throwing a bottle of Techron into the tank whenever I took a long road trip. Let me tell you, running a full tank spiked with a qualitative injector cleaner works miracles...and with mileage too.
i had a mass airflow sensor dirty, but not throwing a check engine light that was making mine delay and hesitate a bit. a lot of people pull it out and clean it with brake cleaner. i would put money that the air flow sensor is your problem
My guess is a dirty MAF meter also or a IGN coil starting to fail. The MAF is screwed to the air filter lid with 2 little phillips screws. Unplug and remove and look down inside for the two little wires. These wires get hot and junk sticks to them and changes their resistance.
OK Iv'e tried several things. Changed the fuel filter, checked and cleaned MAF sensor, Had alternator checked and it shows no problems. The check engine light has been on for years. The codes show bank one catalyst not functioning properly. I had a new Catalytic converter put on this one at 80,000 miles, It now has 178500. I t seems to be some better, but still will not accept full pedal acceleration. Whick way chould I go now?
So you've recently cleared the codes and the only code that reappears is the CAT code?
One thing to check is the intake. Air filter first, then inspect closely for leaks in the intake system. I'd think that you'd hear a hiss. I had a car with a small crack in the intake tube that had similar symptoms. When the engine was making torque it would shirt a little bit, which cause the intake crack to grow (and the engine to lose its power.)
Just checked the intake. Had a small vacumn hose off. Replaced it but no better. I got a bottle of techron today. Will try it next time I fill and drive a few miles. I guess next will be coils. It looks like they would throw codes. I had a 98 that had a bad coil and it threw a code right away. Plugs were changed about 10,000 miles ago and no problems after that change. This happened about 2500 miles after plug change.
I did erase codes but I wrote one down. P0171 sytem too lean Bank 1. What would be the cause and how do I fix that. It had 2 other codes, 1 was catalyst and cn't remember the other one. If I know this car it will not take but a little driving for check engine light to reappear.
