About a month ago, I washed my 02 Avalon XLS. After the wash job I noticed a clicking sound coming from under the hood. I found that the noise was the EFI relay. When I drove the car that same evening the abs light was flashing and the vsc and vsc off lights were on. The abs light went off after a semi-hard braking. All of these problems seem to be intermittent. The EFI relay only clicks when the key is out of the ignition. I took the car to O'Rielly's for a code read. They said there were no codes. I talked to a local dealer and they told me that O'Reilly's could only read carb?? codes. The guy at the dealership told me that they had a Lexus come in with the clicking relay problem and they unplugged the door chime and the problem went away. After spending an afternoon standing on my head, I found the door chime and unplugged it, after that the relay would click with the key in and out of the ignition. I'm not a mechanic, but I'm pretty handy. Can anybody shed some light on this or point me in the direction I need to go? Thanks
It may be the key reminder contact in your ignition lock cylinder housing shorting out and feeding power to the EFI relay. You can locate and unplug the switch and see if it still make the noise.
What colors are the wires for the connector you had unplugged? The one I was referring to should have a red wire with a yellow tracer, and white with a black tracer.
Whatever happened with this post? My 00 Avalon has the exact same symptions, but I did not wash the car. I have clicking EFI relay after the ignition switch is off, key is out. ABS light was blinking. Both issues happened at the same time.
I wanted to update everyone. After scouring Toyota Nation and other Googling endlessly, I have finally pinpointed my problem and fixed my problem. I replaced both the ignition switch ~$79 and the switch assy, unlock or key sense switch ~$21. I am sure it was the ~$21 part, but I didn't want to take any chances since I had disassembled my dash to get to the ignition switch. I didn't have to remove the ignition switch assy, it was a tight fit to work, the air duct was in the way, but I managed. I am proud to report my problem is now fixed. So no more clicking, no more draining batteries.
ABS light has been flashing, then stays on for a while, then off, intermittently for a couple of months on my 2000 Avalon XLS with no codes. After having the steering column recall work done by a Toyota dealership a couple of weeks ago, now additionally have intermittent relay clicking when the key is out of the ignition, and also intermittent door chiming when the door is open but the car has been turned off and the key is out of the ignition. Two Toyota dealerships, after charging me $105 each for an hours worth of diagnostics, tell me that they would probably need extensive time to find problem. They tell me that it is just best to purchase another vehicle! They have also told me that my ignition switch is fine and the problems have nothing to do with the steering column recall work done. Help if you can. Thanks
I highly recommend the key sense switch ~$21. You can fix yourself in <10 minutes. If this does not work, then make the decision about the ignition switch or their suggestion. The ignition switch is slightly more difficult due to the air duct in the way, but I was able to tackle it in less than an hour. Good luck.
Do you have a part number for the key sensor switch? I called my local dealer and the parts guy says there is no such part. He sent me a key inter(?) solenoid switch ~$73. Part # 8543233020 Thx.
Hi, I have the same problem with my Avalon'00. during rain season, the ticker noise started coming from EFI relay when the key is out. The abs light is on and power windows button on the driver side stops working along with the door lock unlock button.
