USA Rear Suspension Banging

The rear suspension (especially the right side) on my '04 XLS has been banging over bumps for awhile and occassionally bottoming out with rear passengers. Mileage is 75K. I've done the bump test and the struts still have a good amount of resistance. Is it time for struts, mounts or both?

Has anyone come across a heavier rear coil spring that will fit?

Banging noises can be caused by the upper strut mounts, sway bar bushings, sway bar end links.

The upper strut mounts area located on the outer side of rear deck speakers. Listen in this area as the car is being driven over bumps.

The struts themselves rarely make this type of noise.

replace your bushing on your rear sway bar......almost a guarantee that will solve your problem.....just did this myself on my 03.....cost me $20 from the dealer and it took me less that 30 minutes!

check your upper strut mounts and rear sway bar busings....almost all older avalons have this noise when either of these go up
im fairly sure that at that milage the struts and mounts should be OK, and its most likely the rear sway bar busings since theyre the first to fail.

I repaired the Bushings, the are split, I clued in a piece of rubber from a car inner-tube, which is about 2mm thick, this takes care of the wear of the stabilizer bar and Bushing, no need to change the Bar, took me 1 Hour no cost, the two screws that hold the bushing can easily be removed as long as the are not rusted. No need to remove any links, just jack up the car in the rear on both sides it took care of the noisy from suspension.
