Water in Trunk of 2000 AVALON!!!

I am the original owner of 2000 Avalon XLS and only recently have begun to experience water in the trunk which settles into the wheel well after HEAVY RAIN. I just had it at the Toyota dealer's for service and they were not able to determine the source of the leak even after they ran water on the car with no luck in determining the cause of the water getting into the trunk. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Thank you. John

I got hit in a parking lot a few years back which resulted in a slight warping of the trunk, allowing water to leak from the seal by the rear window and run down the sides of the trunk and gave the appearance of a leak in the bottom. When I had the warping repaired, the tech also said bad seals would produce the same affect. This may seem a dumb question, but have you thoroughly inspected all the seals? Leaks can be tricky, and originate where you least expect them.

Did the dealer remove the trim to inspect for leak when they were testing it? Are any of the trim pieces wet?

Check the wells on either side of the tire well for water.

There may be an air duct on the side of the trunk, there was a TSB about the flap leaking.

Feel up under the trunk where the hinge is inside the channel for water. This will help determine if the water is coming from above.

Have you removed the trunk floor and looked for water trails.

Hello all, I have this issue and I have found the cause on mine yesterday. It has also been know in the BMW world in which I am heavily involved in. The cause is the sunroof weather strip and/or your sunroof drain channel is clogged with either grime, dirt, or a leaf/leaves. In my case it was both. I found it by running water from my water hose on top of the sunroof for a few minutes. I then opened the trunk see where the water was splattering from. On the right side in the trunk, take out the trim panel. There is a drain tube that exits the floor of the floor of the trunk(make sure your hose is still in good condition as well). It starts from the sunroof drains in the rear passenger seat. You will have to partially remove the ceiling trim. I stuck a vacuum hose in there and swiped with my hand to get the gunk out. I will later be replacing the sunroof weather strip as well. Hope this helps some of you guys out.
