2001 Avalon Keyless Remote Programming

Hi, Folks,

I'm trying to add a transmitter to an exisiting code. Here are the instructions I'm working with:

"To begin with, the vehicle should be as follows
- The key is not inserted in the ignition key cylinder
- Driver's door is OPEN (other doors are CLOSED)
- Driver's door is UNLOCKED

1. Insert the key into the ignition key cylinder, then remove it.

2. Within 40 seconds: Using the door control switch (for manual operation) move
the switch 5 times to LOCK/UNLOCK at approximately 1 second intervals (so in
this step, hit the lock button on the driver's door, then the unlock button a
second later, and repeat 5 times)

3. Close the driver's door, then open it

4. Repeat step 2, again within 40 seconds

5. Insert the key into the ignition cylinder

6. Turn the ignition switch (the key) from ON to LOCK at approximately 1 second
intervals for 1 - 5 times, depending on which mode..

Add mode - 1 time
Rewrite mode - 2 times
Confirmation mode - 3 times
Erase mode - 5 times

7. Remove the key from the ignition key cylinder

8a. If add, rewrite, or erase mode have been selected:

The car should now lock and unlock the door itself, the number of times
depending on which mode you selected. The number will be the same number you
used to select the mode. So if you chose add, then the car will lock and unlock
once, if you chose rewrite, then the car will lock and unlock twice...

8b. The car will lock/unlock itself at 2 second intervals for each set of code
programmed into the car.

9. Press the transmitter switch for at least 1 second

10. The wireless door lock ECU automatically performs LOCK-UNLOCK once at a 1
second interval to inform the technician that it has received the signal from
the transmitter

11. Close the driver's door, then open it.

12. Press the transmitter switch for at least 1 second

13. The car will LOCK-UNLOCK one or twice at 1 second intervals. If it
LOCK-UNLOCK's once, then the it is completed. If it LOCK-UNLOCK's twice, then it
has not been completed because the ECU didn't receive the same code from steps 9
and 12 or when selecting add mode, a recognition code indicating registration
completed was already received.

In case it lock-unlock's twice, just go back to step 9 and keep trying"

I'm almost there, but I can't get the transmitter to pick up the code--I get through Step 8.a, but after I press the transmitter, I get the error sign of Avalon locking-unlocking twice.

I've also tried using the 2001 Camry transmitter programing:

"8. Press lock and unlock buttons on transmitter
simultaneously for 1-2
seconds then release
9. Press lock and unlock buttons on transmitter again
simultaneously
for 1-2 seconds then release
10.Press lock alone for 1 second, then release"

But it still won't take.

Can anybody out there get me through the last few steps?

Thanks,
Jake Fisher

Figured it out:

Once you've successfully gotten through step 8.a, then:

a) depress BOTH Lock and Unlock buttons for one second, release

b) depress BOTH Lock and Unlock buttons for three seconds (you'll hear the door lock lock-unlock ONCE)

c) depress Unlock button for three seconds

d) shut car door to end procedure

Addendum: if the code won't take, then repeat steps a) and b), but on c) depress Lock button for three seconds [I stumbled on this success by accident, and am only positive of my first two steps]

Hope this helps somebody someday,
Jake

Hello Jake,
I have recently purchased a keyless entry fob for my 2001 Avalon. It came with instructions to program which is very similar to what you described in your posting. Unfortunately, I could not get it to work. My fob FCC# is HYQ12BAN. Can you please tell me if this is the right fob for the 2001 Avalon? Thanks in advance.

Hi, garfieldltd,

Yes, that's the same FOB as mine. I have a dumb question to ask: are you certain the battery's okay?

Jake

Hi Jake,
Thanks for the quick reply. I have just replaced the battery. I will try to program it again and let you know how it goes.

Regards.

Hi, Jake,
It turned out that your last step in your addendum saves the day. It only works when I pressed and hold the Lock button for 3 seconds. Thanks to you and your instructions. Mine says to hold the Unlock button for 3 seconds and that did not work.

Btw, I tried to bring it to my Toyota dealer and have them program it for me. They want $45 for it. It said "no thanks".

Thanks again.

Hi, garfieldltd,

Hey, that's great, and I'm glad it worked out for you. The gentleman who got the dealership to program it for free was very lucky. I've heard many stories of a $50 charge.

There's a black hole for programming the 2001 Toyotas. Up until '01, the instructions are pretty straightforward.

But I remember having to cobble together several sets, and then make up "c) depress Lock button for three seconds" on my own.

All in all, I probably should've paid the fifty dollars, but these things take on a challenge of their own.

All the best,
Jake
