Be carefull because shops often misdiagnose this problem. It is more common for the strut mounts to go bad. You can't just bring it in for a strut job because they normally don't change the mount.

I have a '02 XLS and had a annoying rattle that came from the front when I went over bumps or even when the road shifted. I was told by two places that the stabilizer links (there is one on each side) where bad and making the noise. I checked them and they seemed fine to me. I replaced them anyway because two places told it to me. It still made the same noise. I bought the struts, coil springs, mounts and bearings (are seperate from the towers on Avalons of my year). The old mounts looked brand new and I couldn't see anything wrong with them. But the problem was fixed after this.

If you are going to replace the struts, i always replace the springs also. Not that much extra and provides much better results.
