Avalon 2002 and Catalytic Converter

I have a 2002 XLS w/ 150k miles on it. 6 months ago the check engine/VSC lights came on. In it went to the local mechanic where a catalytic converter replacement was diagnosed. This was $500.

Now 6 months and about 7K miles later the same diagnostics appear. He now claims that another of the 3 catalyitic converters is defective and this bill will be $1,500.

Does this make sense?

the first catalytic converter didn't come with a warranty? aren't there only 1 catalytic converter. go to a dealership and have it check if you could. mechanics are hungry these days.
