Suspension Noise Question

Hi to everyone,

I have a '02 XLS w/125k miles on it. There was a rattle comming from the front when it went over bumps. I replaced the strut mounts (or towers) and that fixed the noise. However, there is a thumping sound comming from the back when I go over bumps. This is a low thump only over bumps (vs the rattle that was comming from the front over bumps and any changes in the road level). It almost has a hollow sound to it.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking it's not the rear mounts or the sway bar links (they would make more of a rattling also).

thanks for your help,

Joe

Try replace the rear sway bar bushings first, cos they're the cheaper choice to start.

I agree. Replace the sway bar bushings. My 2000 sounded terrible, like something clunking in the trunk over every bump. New bushings were $30 and only take 45 minutes to install. Now its smooth and quiet.
