NAV system being weird in 2004 XLS

I've had the car 8 months now, and have been pleased. A 2004 XLS Avalon with about 40k on it for around 15k. Moved into it from a '95 XL. My first car was an '82 Cressida.

Anyway, the NAV system acting up. One day I'm being navigated to my destination by the gal’s voice on the NAV system, and all of a sudden it jumps to the trip info page on the info menu. I can't go to any other page from there except back to the general info page. And the only option to choose there is the trip info page again. No other icons. No calendar, no maintenance, etc. I can move the curser, but the only thing I can click is the trip info page, and it will go back to that. So I pull off the free way, shut the car down, and restart. I get the NAV page back, and my destination is still set to where I was going. Being a computer IT guy forget about it.

A few days later when I start the car the Toyota splash screen comes up, and instead of going to the page with the I agree button, it goes right to that trip info page again. And from there I can only go to info and then back to trip info. Once again no other icons, and I can't get the map back or do anything else but turn the whole thing off. And when I turn it back on, trip info only again.

After a few days of this it finally goes back to the I agree page on start up. Everything works fine for a few days. Then one day a couple minutes after driving it just goes tot he trip info page again, and same old, can't do anything else with it.

So a couple months of this. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Most times it screws up at start up and goes right to the trip info page. Sometimes I'll be driving along on the map page, and bang, it goes to the trip info page. It only can fix itself at start up. Once it's gone bad, it will only fix itself on a restart of the car. And that only works like 1 in 10 tries.

The battery is near perfect, and the battery connections are clean and in good shape.

The clutch on the ac compressor is shot, but that's the only other thing I know of that's wrong with the car right now.

I need the NAV system to work all the time.

Does any one have any suggestions?
