Could really use some help!

My Avalon makes a whistling noise under acceleration. Only in drive (cannot be heard in neutral) and at low RPMs can it be heard. Its a very specific whistle and cannot be drowned out by the radio or road noise, it is incredibly annoying. The car runs and drives great, no loss of accel or anything.

I took my car to a Toyota specific shop last week, and they told me that the whistle comes from an aftermarket alarm that was installed by original owner, something about the grommet that the wiring goes around or into.

Can anyone advise me on how this could be possible? I trust this shop, but I just don't understand how the new alarm is causing a whistle under acceleration and only in drive gear.

Does it whistle with the car stopped and the engine running? Does it increase in volume when you rev the engine with the car stopped? If this is the case then look at the pcv valve and any air hoses that may not be snug to their fittings. The worst I've heard was a PCV that was not seated completely.

Its hard to tell because it doesn't do it in neutral, only in drive.

It's hard to guess without actually hearing it. The shop you went to seems to think they've found the problem and can fix it. You may have to give them a shot at it. Good Luck!
