2000 Avalon won't start and have checked everything I can think of

Wife drove 2000 XL Avalon to store, came out 3 minutes later and engine would not keep running when she let up on accelerator. When I got there, engine would crank, but not start. Thought maybe fuel pump was issue because couldn’t hear it when ignition turned on. Chilton manual says pump should run for 2 seconds when ignition turned on. Figured out that was wrong as requires signal from starter and crank sensor to enable COPN relay for pump. Have checked fuel pressure (48 psi and holds > 40 when engine shut off), checked spark by pulling wire off plug, inserting screwdriver and holding about ¼ inch from engine bolt, injectors are firing as get nice flashing light when put 12 volt check light across fuel injector when cranking engine. Have also verified I get a trigger signal at the coil when engine is cranking and have ignition confirmation voltage at coil. Have verified crank and cam sensor signals and have also verified continuity between all of these and ECM. Pulled off crank pulley and timing belt covers to verify the timing belt hadn’t slipped and all the marks are dead on. I find it interesting in that although the engine cranks over, it really never fires. What am I missing? Is the engine somehow not getting air (an engine needs a mixture of fuel and air + spark to run), so that it is always flooded? Have put a DVM on most pins on the ECM to check voltages and ground (based on AllData information and haven’t found anything that seems irregular, but I don’t really know what kind of problem I’m looking for any more either.

Additional information

I have also scanned the ECM and there are no trouble codes that show up and have checked all the fuses.

More information

If I attempt to start the car with accelerator to the floor (WOT), the engine starts and runs as long as I keep the accelerator almost to the floor. I quickly get a cloud out the exhaust pipe, which I assume means the car is running WAY to rich, which I expect means I'm not getting enough air to mix with the fuel, but by running WOT I at least get enough for the engine to run. Could the idle air control valve or intake air control valve(s) be the culprit?

Sounds like a classic gummed-up idle air control{IAC} A little carb spray and you'll be fine.

My IAC failed electronically, so after you clean yours if...
You could borrow a functioning one, r&r, and know for sure. Sure sounds like the culprit.

Let's start simple. I see you're in a frigid area. Is it possible you have water or ice crystals in the fuel lines? Did you possibly get bad fuel from the station, I have. Remove the intake hose to the throttle body and check that there is a small opening of the throttle plate (butterfly valve). Check that the throttle body is clean and the plate is not sticking.
Check the accelerator cable. Has it become loose or stretched? Check the Park Neutral Switch cable. When you put it in neutral is the switch showing neutral? Check all positions. If it won't start in Park, then shift to neutral and see if it starts. That's enough from me for now. I've been drinking and my thoughts have become jumbled!

Sorry for the stupid question 05DCLB, but the IAC on my Avalon is attached to the bottom of the right hand port of the throttle body. There is a rectangular opening at the bottom of this right hand port, which perhaps (?) goes to the IAC, but that doesn't look gummed up at least from what I can see. Do I spray down that opening or where do I spray the carb cleaner? Thanks.

Thanks csaxon. Yes, there is a small opening on each of the two throttle plates, isn't sticking and the throttle cable seems to be working properly. Throttle body has a small amount of carbon build up so I'll clean that. The car starts in park, it just won't keep running when I take my foot off the accelerator.

Yes that hole is for IAC, you can spray down in there or take IAC off {the 2 screws under that hole} then you can spray in hole and work valve with your fingers. Make sure the now exposed thimble sized end of valve moves freely.

Thanks 05DCLB! May God bless you for your helpful spirit. My IAC valve could hardly move. A bit of carb spray and moving it around until it spun freely and the Avalon started right up. If your ever passing through Minneapolis let me know.
