Are you sure 5 to 10 miles sounds a little off

You should be more concerned about damaging your fuel pump, by allowing the gas in the tank to get so low. It's your call.

What is the "gas kit"?
Wonder if you could explain in more details?

Wow, I really don't mean to be rude but I asked a simple question that could be answered very easily and all I got was answers that did not help me at all.

I have an 04 Avalon xls so I have the on board computer and when my gas light comes on I have anywhere from 18-24 miles left till empty. The number depends on whether it is highway or city driving. So when the gas light comes on you have about 1 gallon or so of fuel left

In my 1996 Avalon, I've driven 60 miles before a fillup after the gas light has come on, signaling about 3+ gallons left in the tank.

Though I belive in the 2000+ Avalons the fuel tank is reduced from 18.5 gallons to 17 or something crazy. Otherwise I noticed the light pops on and I'll fill it with 14-15 gallons.

I couldn't imangine the light coming on with 10 miles left, the safest bet is to assume you have one gallon left when the light strikes.

Though, when the light comes on you should fill it, as mentioned heat problems, and too keep in mind that streching the time between fillups does not use any less gas, you still drive the same distance! (well, sure the added weight may decrease mpg, but you'll always have gas to go somewhere!)

When I bought my car it did not have the manual. So I am not sure but I was wondering if anyone knew what the manual said about how many gallons are left when the gas light comes on. Does anybody have the manual for a 2002 Avalon ? if so we can know exactly.
