Power Window Question

The power window in my rear door (driver's side) quit working. (Fortunately in the up position). When I push the switch I hear a click and the interior light dims for a second, so I'm thinking the switches work and the problem is with the motor or something mechanical is binding. Any advice on how to troubleshoot this? How difficult is it to remove the interior trim to check out the window? This is a 2000 xls. Thanks!

anyone?

OK, what is the best way to remove the door pannel without breaking anything so I can have a look inside?

Are the window motors interchangable? Can I try one from another door and see if it works as a test?

Thanks

I have the same problem with my driver's window. It's been diagnosed as a bad motor and also dirty guide tracks, but since I rarely roll my windows down anyway I haven't bothered to get it fixed. This seems to be a very common issue with the Avalon regardless of year of manufacture. If anyone chimes in with info about how to tackle the repair I will probably do it myself as well.

If you PM me and give me your email I can send you the shop manual PDF for doing body work, which the door is included in that. It is not very hard to get the door panel off, but if you don't know what you are doing you will break stuff.

Just a quick search on the internet and I found the motors running from $96 to $122. Those are for remanufactured systems.

As a side note.... Not too long ago I had to replace the window motor (sometimes they are called "window regulators") on my 2000 Chrysler Town and Country. The dealer wanted almost $300 just for the window motor. I called a large salvage yard to see if I could get a used motor. They said "we will do you one better, you can get a NEW aftermarket part for $80 from us". The only difference between the Chrysler and the aftermarket was the aftermarket didn't say "Chrysler" on it.

It took me about 2 hours to change it out and I saved myself at least $300.
