2000 Avalon XL CEL Issue

Hi All! New Avalon owner and user here.

I purchased a 2000 Avalon XL with 156K miles a couple months ago. The CEL came on a few weeks ago and the code came up P0420. My mechanic reset the code. Since then, it has come on then turned itself off, then just today has come on again.

Each time it has come on, it has been within 30 miles of filling up the gas tank. I have turned the cap to one, two, three and no clicks thinking (hoping) it was as simple as that; doesn't seem to help, at least immediately.

Before I start swapping out sensors and cat. converters, any other cheaper ideas of what could be causing it? Thanks, G.

Sorry for the weird format but this is straight out of the manual. Let us know if you need a part.

Thanks
Gregg

DTC P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold
(Bank 1)
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The ECM observes the waveform of the heated oxygen sensor located behind the catalyst to determine
whether the catalyst performance has deteriorated.
If the catalyst is functioning normally, the waveform of the heated oxygen sensor located behind the catalyst
switches back and forth between rich and lean much more slowly.
When the waveform of the heated oxygen sensor located behind the catalyst alternates flutteringly between
rich and lean, it indicates that catalyst performance has deteriorated.
DTC No. DTC Detecting Condition Trouble Area

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
Read freeze frame data using the hand
held tester or OBD II scan tool. Because freeze frame records the
engine conditions when the malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, it is useful for determining
whether the vehicle was running or stopped, the engine was warmed up or not, the air
fuel ratio was lean
or rich, etc. at the time of the malfunction.
