Canada Downgrading tire size

My father just bought a 2000 Avalon XLS.
He has mint winter tires and rims from his old car (2003 Chev Malibu).
The winter tires are 15" with a 5 bolt pattern, while his new Avalon tires are 16"

My question is: Can you put 15" winter rims and tires on this car...safely?

Thanks,
Karl

As I understand it the Avalon can handle between 15" to 17" wheels safely. You could go to tirerack.com and use their online configuration tool to check on wheels and/or tire sizes for your Avalon, and if you have any questions you can call them....they're very helpful over the phone.

I have always understood that mixing wheel sizes can mess with your ABS system. You might want to do some research on that specific issue before going this way.

tire sticker

Look in the drivers door jamb. Unless it has been removed there will be a sticker from the factory stating what size tires/wheels can be installed without having to concern yourself with side effects. I think avalon will accept both 15 and 16 inch tires/wheels with no other effects - keep in mind the 15 and 16 inch tires will have different sidewall heights to maintain the same overall diameter.
