Hey All,
My daughter's 2001 Avalon XLS had a weak battery. It needed a jump 3X in the last 2 weeks, always started when jumped. She bought a battery, and we replaced. Removed Neg then Positive on old battery, Then connected Positive and then Negative on new battery. Car cranks real strong but wont turn over, just keeps cranking. Noticed security light on, read somewhere that factory security needs to be reset, but dont know how. Tried searching with no success. Owners Manual is useless, but does say needs to be reset. Alternator is fine, cables are fine, starter is fine. Acts as if a kill switch was installed. Any help would be appreciated.
Kind Regards,

I searched under "battery reset" in the camry forums and got tons of similar situations. Evidently disconnecting the battery puts your computer into learning mode. Everything from MAF cleaning to vacuum lines was offered, but the overwhelming response for correct "resetting" was to start the car and let it idle for 5-10 minutes for the computer to reset. In your case, you may have to turn the ignition "on" for a while, and then start it.
BTW - One common item in almost all of the threads was the original poster never reporting what finally did work to solve the problem.
I am actually having this same problem. Had a bad battery. Bought a new one as well as the battery cable clamps. In trying to start the car, everything works fine. Engine turns but when you release the key. The engine then dies. one strange thing though, if I press the gas peddle as I start the engine, the motor will rev and stay on until I release the throttle, then the engine dies. So it's not the starter, alternator shouldnt keep the motor from running, or at least until the battery runs out, is this due to a "reset" or another underlying issue?

Sounds like your IACV valve needs a cleaning. Take out the intake tube that is connected to the throttle body. The Avalon has dual throttle and the one next to the firewall has a small hole on the inside of it. Spray some electric cleaner or carb cleaner into the hole and let it soak for at least 10 minutes. Start the engine...if it struggles to start, give it some gas until it starts. Clean your whole throttle body while you're doing this with the throttle body cleaner if you can. The car will struggle a little when you do the cleaning but just give it some gas. There will be some smoke so do it in an open area. GOOD LUCK!

Ok so i took it into a shop. The mechanic mentioned the same thing so I agreed to a fuel system check and cleaning. $120.00. Later that same day recieved a call from the machanic that my car was ready. he mentioned that it did not need the fuel system cleaning after all. My battery cables were still so dirty with corrosion that the cables, terminals and posts needed to all be cleaned. this is what caused the engine to not stay running. $60.00 and I was back on the road! It appears that I did not clean them enough! The slightest lack of a good connection will not allow the motor to draw the needed amps to keep the engine running! So the damage was really just a new battery! 2004 Avalon.....I still love ya! but thanks for the info!
