Avalon Power steering pump replacement

Hi I have a Toyota Avalon 2000. The power steering pump is leaking. Can any one suggest an approach to resolve the issue? The shop is asking $325 for complete replacement. I found the pump online for $165. How complicated is to replace it my self? Should I pay the $325 for the to do it?
Can any one tell me the pump I could get online? They have many different kinds.
Thanks’ in advance.

The power steering pump itself is not hard to remove. I had a lot trouble with the rack and pinion connection to the pump and subsequent installation to get the nut tightened again. My experience is that I had to remove the rank and pinion to remove the steering pump. Others may have figured a way to remove the steering pump without the removing the rack and pinion. After removing the rack and pinion, which is bear due working in tight spaces, together with the steering pump, I loosend the nut with two long pipe wrenches twisting in opposite directions by stepping on the wrenches. Since it is easier to install the rack and pinion and pump separately, the same connecting nut had to be tighten to the same torque using a long open end wrench which is threaded up into the nut area. I do not remember which pump I bought, but I would just buy a new one.

hope this helps,

Norman

Two ways you could go. Replace the whole pump, which an OEM one is $347.50 MSRP and I sell them to TN members for $243.25. Or, once you get it off, you could try just rebuilding it with an OEM kit. It is $32.58 MSRP and TN member would pay $22.81.

Of course there is also the aftermarkets, but my experience has not yeilded good results with them. So I'd be cautious when dealing with an aftermarket one.

I hope this information helps you out. If you need any more information or have additional questions, don't hesitate to contact me.
