Driver door won't open from inside.

I have a 2000 Toyota Avalon and I can open the driver's side door from outside of the vehicle, however the door will not open from inside the vehicle. When you pull the handle nothing happens.

Is this a common problem? Any idea what I need to fix/replace?

Thanks.

You say "drivers side door". The rear one has a child safety lock.
The front one will have a linkage rod or door handle problem which only can be diagnosed with the panel off.
Either isn't a big deal.

how hard is the panel to remove? Any instructions for it?

* it's the driver's side front panel.

I got the door skin off and found the cable that connects the handle to the latch had snapped. I got the cable off on the handle side but I have no idea how to get it off on the latch side. I've removed quite a bit of pieces including that big plastic piece so I can look in where the latch is. Does anyone know how to replace the white cable on the latch side? Is this cable something I can buy from the dealer?

Thanks.
