How to disable automatic door lock feature on 2000 Avalon

Hi,
This feature really bothers me. The door lock automatically when driving and even when loading things in the trunk. How do I turn off this feature?
I tried searching the forum using variations of the title. It came up with 6 pages of posts, all of which seemed to have nothing to do with my problem and most weren't even door related?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Alex

That worked!

Thanks csaxon, that worked.
I would also like to stop the automatic locking when the trunk is opened and closed after using the remote to unlock the car.
Do you know how to do that?

Thanks

Alex

I agree the doors locking while using the trunk can be annoying. I guess it prevents you from being an idiot and leaving your car open when your not entering.

I totally agree with door locks, but did I miss something. How did you disable that feature?

I don't know what happened to the reply that told me how to fix it. I don't remember the procedure but it was fairly simple. I think csaxon may have guided me to another thread where the procedure was discussed.

No kidding, this works. I've done it for my Avy. Of course it will go back to auto locking if you ever disconnect the battery for some reason.

(1) Enter the vehicle and shut all the doors
(2) Insert the key into the ignition cylinder and turn it to the ON
position (not ACC)
(3) Open the driver's door and keep it open.
(4) Turn the key to the LOCK position and remove it from the ignition
cylinder.
(5) Insert the key into the ignition cylinder and remove it. Repeat this
operation three more times. (end this step with the key out of the
ignition cylinder)
(6)Push the UNLOCK button on the driver's door master switch 5 times
within 10 seconds. Wait at least 10 seconds and shut the driver's door.
(7) Verify the auto lock operation has been disabled by starting the
engine, putting the vehicle into a gear and releasing the brake pedal.

If you're talking about auto re-locking if you fail to open a door within 30 seconds or so of having unlocked with the remote, I've never seen a user employable procedure to defeat that. Perhaps it could be changed with a factory scan tool, with the delay lengthened if not turned off. Don't know that I'd even want to totally defeat this safety feature, as the fob in my pocket can be accidentally pressed, and the remote in my car opens the garage that leads into my house, and....

I like the safety of the auto re-lock.

Thanks, but I actually like that feature, I am talking about the auto door lock when you place in drive or reverse. Mine does not unlock when you put it back in park to exit the car. VERY frustrating when you get out to get something out of the back seat and forget to unlock doors. My wife will love me if this can be turned off.

There are, I believe, four different settings that can be selected for the auto-lock feature. The process to change is detailed in the owners manual. I have my gen 1 and gen 2 set to lock when put in gear, unlock in park.

My manual just says the auto door lock feature can be disabled, and to see my dealer to get that done. Right now my car locks all the doors when put in gear and only unlocks the driver's door when put in park / shut off. I would really like to know how to set it to lock when in gear and unlock all the doors when in park. Thanks.

My gen 2 is an '03 and the OM procedure works. You don't give your year. If you can't find in your paper OM, go to the manufacturer's website, where you can register and access free downloadable PDFs that are searchable. Much better than an index.

I cannot give the URL because the over-the-top mods here consider that a violation of the manufacturer's copyrights. But it's the obvious site.
