anytime you need to recharge your system, that means that there is a leak. It is a closed system and the r134 should never go anywhere. I would take it to a shop and they can put a dye in the r134 and check for leaks. If there are no leaks, it would sound like a compressor is in order. Anytime the a/c system is opened up, you will want to replace the reciever/dryer(accumulator) to remove any moisture. You may have a sight glass on the line that should show you if you have a full charge. If you are low on r134 the compressor will not automatically engage and you can see the pulley free spinning until the clutch is engaged.
