My 2000 Avalon w/137k miles just lit up warning light and Autozone gave me the following diagnostic codes for the warning light P0420, P0442 and P1663. Have ck other posts but none seem to define same problem codes. Anyone out there with similar codes and if so any help on what was the likely culprit?
Those are cat codes. I don't normally see a cat fail, those are the oxygen sensors. I normally see cat codes when something in the MAF is not right and the cat gets gases beyond the range that they are used too. Maybe scan again and see if a p0171-174 comes up. Could be a bad O2 sensor though. Girlfriend through a 420 code in a celica, result of a bad MAF that also gave a po171 and a p1349vvti malfunction.

thks, i recently changed he MAF (from Autozone) and both OCV's (Toyo OEM parts). I will ck out the O2 sensors as well as the gas cap since this appears to be one of the items to ck for P0442 code
I too got the same codes on my 2000 Avalon at around 90 K miles and I just kept reseting the codes till they went away and were replaced with p0171-174 which hinted to a MAF replacement.
I replaced the MAF and haven't seen any of those codes return for about 30K added miles now.
Before going out and spending a bunch of money get a can of Mass Airflow sensor (MAS) cleaner and spray down the sensor. Had the same code on my 2000 Avalon and a $4 can of cleaner solved the problem. Beats $200+ for a new O2 sensor. It's right after the air cleaner... just a tiny little post that hangs down. You don't even have to take the air intake apart, just 2 screws and it comes right out. Caution.. handle carefully!

how much would I expect to pay for mass air flow sensor replacement, fuel filter replacement, fuel system kit, throttle body cleaning, including parts at a non dealer?
The MAF is around $125 online and a ten dollar labor issue unless you unplug it and back out the two screws yourself.
I've seen throttle plate cleaning go for $75 to $200 depending on how much they do. Lots of options.
for those who have gotten these codes as well, take a look at my postings under O2 sensor replacement for resolution. Eurobob1978's posing on this thread was correct in that these codes where for bad O sensors (I replace all three of them) and not a bad Cat converter
