A/C Problem on 01' Avalon

Hi TN peeps,
The A/C on my 2001 just started acting wierd yesterday. When I turn on the A/C the rpm surges up and down between 500rpm and 1500rpm. It makes some sound like, eek eek eek eek where the belts are. I can smell some burnt fume around there when the A/C is on and it's coming from around the belts. The belts are in good condition, no cracks or nothing. Sometimes the light on the A/C button blinks. There were freon in the A/C system so I let it all out to see if it would make the eek eek eek sound, it doesn't. I was wondering if anyone had this kind of problem before and the fix. Thanks in advance. I live in Texas and it gets really hot here in the summer.

Chances are either the AC compressor clutch or the AC compressor itself is failing. By letting out all of the refrigerant, the low pressure switch prevents the AC compressor from kicking on (not the best way to do that BTW! - better just to turn it off with the button on the HVAC panel). You need to figure out what the problem is and repair/have it repaired. Agreed - the South in the summer w/o AC is no fun!!

I just saw one of csaxon post on AC Button Blinking. He said to the originial poster that the AC belt might have slipped due to puddles etc...I was coming back home from Oklahoma on Sunday night and it was raining hard so I'm thinking of giving the belt a look to see if it slip.

That's usually a very temporary thing that goes away as soon as the belt dries out, but won't hurt to check.

Okay...it's fixed. Basically what was in the system was all air instead of freon. So I had to vacuum, oil, and recharge the system. Problem fix, hopefully. It was leaking a little bit on the low pressure nozzle.
